The Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K Pro suits music videos, brand films, documentaries and wedding films that aim for a cinema look, for far less than a full cinema camera costs. It also handles shoots that run into the evening well. It has two base ISO settings, 400 and 3200 (ISO is how sensitive the camera is to light), so the grain stays low as the light drops.
Price and rental terms
The camera is ₦50,000 a day. Book it for seven days or more and you pay the weekly rate of ₦250,000, which is the price of five days.
You collect the camera at 8am and return it by 8am the following day. If it comes back late, the extra time is charged at the day rate.
What comes with it
You get the camera body with the Blackmagic Battery Pro Grip. The camera has:
- A Super 35 sensor (a size used in many cinema cameras) that records up to 6K, and a Canon EF lens mount
- Built-in ND filters at 2, 4 and 6 stops. ND filters cut the light coming in, and each stop halves it. In bright Abuja sun, you can keep the lens wide open and the background soft without screw-on filters.
Batteries and recording media (the cards or drive you record to) aren't included. A laptop power bank with a DC cable is available as an add-on if you ask for it when you book.
Lenses are rented separately. The Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 Art fits the EF mount and is made for cropped sensors like this one, so the two go well together.
Sun and low light on one shoot
Picture a music video that starts by Jabi Lake in the afternoon sun and ends in a lounge after dark. Outside, you switch in the ND and keep the lens wide open, so the artist is sharp and the background is soft. Indoors, you move up to ISO 3200 and the grain stays low. One camera covers the whole day.
Before you book
Plan how to keep it steady. There's no stabilisation inside the camera, so it needs a tripod, a gimbal (a motorised handle that keeps the camera smooth) or very steady hands. Autofocus works with lenses that support it, but only when you press to focus, and it won't follow someone who's moving. If you're shooting handheld, budget for a gimbal as well. The RS 4 Pro carries it easily.
Bring storage. The camera records BRAW, Blackmagic's raw format, which stores the picture with little processing, so 6K files fill cards fast. It takes CFast 2.0 cards (a fast type of memory card), UHS-II SD cards, or an external SSD over USB-C. Work out how much space your running time needs before the day.
